Lovers leap by Pedro Estate

A tragic myth, the founder of the Ceylon tea industry and a Royal visit are just part of the history of this famous Estate.

Before James Taylor, the acknowledged founder of the Ceylon tea industry first set foot on the first land he bought which grew over time to become the Lovers Leap Estate, a young prince and the girl he loved jumped to their deaths rather than be dragged back to his father’s palace by soldiers and leave his beloved.

Whilst we’ll never know the absolute truth behind this story (and from which our Estate got its name), we know for certain that in April 1954 Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh drove themselves in an Austin 7 from The Governors House to the Pedro Estate where they spent an idyllic day and night in the perfect calm of the Managers’ bungalow before resuming their hectic Commonwealth tour.

Today, the same calm can still be found to provide perfect growing conditions for our high quality tea

Halgolla Estate

Indiana Jones would feel at home in the Halgolla Estate. Located just 50 miles from the urban sprawl of Colombo yet it’s a different world. Nestled in the cloud covered mountains with virgin forest on one side and great swathes of tea bushes on the other, you’re only surrounded by the silence, the buzzing of insects and swarms of banana yellow and sky blue butterflies that flit through the pine-scented cool mountain air.
Close by is the remarkable “mini world’s-end”, a sheer drop into the mist covered valley below and the famous “dripping rock” that’s fed by one of the many cold mountain streams that’s ideal for cooling off under.
Bisected by rough roads, hidden pathways and dancing streams, Halgolla Estate is a magical place for growing some of the finest tea available.

Oliphant

It was 30 smuggled “China Jat” tea plants from China that was the foundation of the highland Oliphant Estate in the mid-19th century where you can still explore the oldest registered operational tea factory in Sri Lanka.
Blessed with a superb climate it did not take long for lines of succulent tea bushes to supplement the Asoka trees, elephants and gem stones that were common in the area.
Now our Oliphant Estate produces superb specialist big leaf green teas with the famous Nuwara Eliya strength.

From the granite uplands of Inverness in Scotland to the soft, undulating uplands of our Inverness Estate in the Meepilimana mountains of Nuwara Eliya – and not a Scotsman in sight, only a simple name and a deep pride in our finest home grown tea.

Ingestry Estate

Whilst the Ingestry name goes back to the UK’s Doomsday Book of the 11th century, our plantation of the same name is named after a Welsh village rather than a Scottish one.
And one of the first planters, William Cameron, changed the system of planting, pruning and plucking to improve both the crop yield and the resulting tea flavour by only plucking the finest leaves rather than as many leaves as possible.
In fact, he was complimented by the acknowledged father of Ceylon Tea, James Taylor, who introduced his finer plucking methods to other planters.
We have maintained William’s plucking methods to this day to produce the finest Ceylon Tea available.
And standing outside our factory is a statue of Mahatma Gandhi to remind us that, “A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.”

Robgill Estate

The Scots are a remarkable people because many emigrated to far flung corners of the world that bore a resemblance to the wild scenery of their homeland as well as offering unique opportunities.
So it was no surprise that 2 Scottish planters from Dumfries settled in a small corner of Ceylon near Horton Plains and called it Robgill after the Robgill Tower near their Scottish birthplace.
By 1941 the Estate had prospered so much that it took 2 managers to oversee operations and a tea bush planted by one of them, HW Noyle, still flourishes to this day guarding one of the tea fields.
Today, Robgill Estate produces over 356,000 kgs of full bodied tea.
